The Story of a Donut

Friday mornings I volunteer at the Legacy Center Daycare in exchange for a membership. The kids come with me and about every other week Mia asks if she can have a donut from the food court. Sometimes the answer is yes; most often it's no. On this particular Friday, the answer was no, and she was not happy with me. In some sort of effort to avoid a complete meltdown I told her that we had more than enough treats at home and she could have one of those.

Apparently she took that to mean donuts. When we got home and I explained to her we didn't have donuts she said, "that's ok mom. We can make donuts!" In her mind that was even better and she kept asking me all day. And I continued to avoid/put it off. "After lunch" then it was "after naps" until it was almost dinner time and we still hadn't made any. So finally around 5:30 that night I pulled out a cookbook so we could make donuts. And then I read, "chill for 2 hours." WHAT?! That puts us close bedtime and then we'll still have to cut them out, cook them, and eat them. Sigh. So like a good mom (who put it off all day...) I started making the dough.

Just after 8 pm we finally started cooking the donuts. My little helpers were thrilled.Dad slaved away at the stove, cooking to perfection.Of course, when it's past your bedtime and you didn't have a nap and dad says you can't come any closer to the stove, there's bound to be some tears. But mostly the kids thoroughly enjoyed helping to make donuts, and then eating them of course.
Mia wanted one with frosting and sprinkles. Luckily we had both on hand and she made this beauty. And after one bite she wanted a plain glazed one.Oh, and next time Mia asks for a donut at the Legacy Center,
SHE'S GETTING ONE!
